Welcome to ProTech Voice's English Grammar and Communication quick tips.

Today's quick tip is: Discriminative listening

Discriminative listening is when you are not only listening to the person whom you’re talking to but focusing on their nonverbal cues as well. Examples of nonverbal cues of speech are inflection, gestures, pitch, volume, and voice quality. Have a family member or friend ever spoken with you about a personal situation? By their facial expression and voice change you knew it was more information they were not telling you. This knowledge of understanding the speaker’s meaning is also known as “reading between the lines.” This type of listening activity is considered discriminative listening.

Today’s activity: Try to focus on your conversation with friends and family and be the great listener they require in their time of need. Enjoy discovering your new type of listening skill today! Join us next time as we will look at another type of listening skill.
